Whenever some sad incident happened around us due to depression our social media walls are populated with the messages like ,
“You Can Talk to Me”
“I am available if you’re feeling lonely”
“Call me if you need someone” etc
But I think it doesn’t work like this.
How come a random person all of a sudden will start talking and open his heart in front of you?
How could a person going through some situation start a discussion with some stranger about depression or a problem?
It has no impact until you are an actual clinical psychologist or a counsellor.
We can’t help strangers going through a rough phase but we can always create an environment where family members don’t hesitate but feel comfortable talking to each other without fear of being judged.
It actually starts from home, then the people around us and then the extended family and friends.
Depression is real. I just went through a little episode during my last days in Karachi. That feeling of emptiness and the block you feel inside won’t let you do anything. No matter how passionate you are about something, it feels like everything is useless.
One important reminder is when someone is going through this phase, do not enforce your religious beliefs on him. Connecting with Allah is equally important but just like when we are sick we don’t solely rely on prayer and recitation, we also take medication to cure, it’s the same for the mental health and depression as well. Seeking help is absolutely fine. sometimes things just get perfectly alright by talking or by crying your eyes out.

What other things we can do to help?
- Initiate the conversation. If you are feeling something unusual in a person’s behaviour urge them to talk, Maybe they are waiting for you to initiate.
- Be kind, All the time. You don’t know what the other person is going through.
- Don’t be judgemental. The most common cause people don’t want to open their hearts in front of someone is the fear of judgement. Unfortunately in our Pakistani society, every other person is always ready to judge you. Please.. you don’t have to comment or taunt about other people’s clothes, lifestyle, how they keep their houses, how do they talk. Let them be comfortable with your kindness so they could consider your shoulder if they want to cry.
