Urdu and Poetry

A Mushaira was happening in Toronto and I called the Admin.
Can I bring my kids?
How old are they, he asked 8 and 5, But what they will do there, He was a bit confused probably imagining cranky kids breaking the peace of a poetic environment.
They will watch and learn as I did in my childhood. I replied.
Ok ok fine. He replied in rush.
We went to the Mushaira, It was in one of the school Auditoriums. Honestly, We had a little fear too.
My bag was full of snacks and different entertaining goodies just in case. Also, we chose to sit at the last rows in case we had to move out without disturbance.
Mushaira started and the Admin started to talk about how important it is to keep our Urdu alive and pass it to our next generation and all of the sudden he started talking about Our call & my reply and then he asked where are you guys please wave and we were a bit shy & a little happy showed our presence from the back seats while seeing everyone’s face turning back and watching us while applauding. It was a pleasant surprise & a motivating experience and on the way back my daughter was creating her poetry talking about Chand, Phool, Hawa, Sitarey and Raat.
For me, a language is not just a way to express but it is the whole culture, heritage, nature and vibe of that specific region. We all want our kids to learn other languages then why lose that treasure we already have?
I strongly believe that when the language is lost, the connection is lost. The connection with your roots, Identity, Literature, Poetry, Books, Music, Culture, Values, Festivities, Occasions and even sometimes the connection with the elders & Grandparents.
So preserve our language, preserve Urdu
اردو محبت ہے!
How do I teach my kids Urdu? Stay Tuned for that
