I still remember when a special newspaper edition came on some national days, There was a photo of a very graceful lady sitting in “Ghararah” smiling with pride and looking absolutely gorgeous. She was Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan(Pakistan’s First Lady), and “Ghararah” was like her symbol. “Ghararah” a dress originated from “Lukhnow” was a traditional dress of Indian sub continent’s Muslim women, consists of a shirt, a dupatta (veil), and a special bottom, a pair of wide pants ruched at the knee, so they flare out dramatically.
The highlight of Ghararah is its “Gote” which means Knee area that was usually embroidered with “Gota” & “Zari” work or back in the days with Silver & Gold (yes for real). It was also considered a Royal dress wore by families of Nawabs.Ghararah was a everyday attire that time, I heard “Shalwar Kameez” wasn’t considered a modest dress. Ladies either wear Ghararas or different kind of Pajamas. My MIL used to wear only Ghararah dresses before her marriage. After she got married, once her father visited her, and she felt a bit embarrassed as she never wore regular shalwar suit before in front of him. Then her father made her comfortable and said to her that as now you are in a new home, it is ok to adopt new values.Old people from Lukhnow still take this dress as their legacy. My SIL’S MIL wore Gharara comfortably her whole life.I have a sweet memory of visiting her for the first time after my wedding ,an old lady traditionally carrying her white Gharara showed me her black and white photo albums.
Ghararah now considered as a wedding or formal attire . Many innovations were made to this dress with time and fashion, but nothing carries a grace like the classic one.In recent wedding all the ladies from family lighted up the wedding wearing variety of beautiful Ghararas & I loved mine designed by my Bhabhi.
I remember when my nephew was a baby I used to had baby talks with him that when Hamza would get married, he will make Phuppo a Ghararah ,My bhabhi laughed and said all you want is Ghararah?no jewellery or gold,No I think I replied,Ghararah is a beauty 😍.
