Joy Of First Home

I connected my old hard drive to my computer, and suddenly, it felt like we were traveling in a time machine. There were photos from my university days, literary activities, gatherings with friends, graduation, my wedding—and then came an entire chapter of memories from twenty two years ago, when we moved to Canada and set up our very first apartment.

Looking through those pictures wasn’t just looking at old photographs. It was like meeting the people we used to be, the lives we once lived, and the little moments we had no idea would one day become memories.

The joy of setting up your first home is truly unique. No matter how small or simple, there’s a certain magic in shaping a space that reflects your personality and brings you comfort. It’s not just about the furniture or decor, but the freedom to create a corner of the world that’s entirely your own. Every choice, from a little painting on the wall to the arrangement of a favorite book on the shelf, becomes a reflection of you.

There’s a quiet pleasure in the little details, choosing the perfect cozy rug, placing a plant by the window to catch the light, or arranging a small reading nook just the way you like it. Even the most ordinary things feel special when they’re part of your home, and the space starts to feel like an extension of your heart and mind.

Initially when we moved, we only had our bedroom set, which was a wedding gift from my in-laws. But we hadn’t brought the set with us. That night, we slept on the carpet with just a bed sheet(no back issues 😉). Akmal had to go to work, so I walked a long way to get groceries. Later, we put a love seat from bedroom in the living room and complemented it with a set of three Ikea stools. Tadaa! We had a reasonable space for guests.

The first thing we bought was a bookshelf and a recliner to convert our little Sun room into a library, along with indoor rose plants to give it a touch of nature.

After that, there was a long journey, moving homes, having kids, crafting and creating spaces filled with love, only to eventually leave them behind, as it’s all part of the journey.

I’ve learned that things aren’t nearly as important as time, how we spend it, how we live in the moment and enjoy it, and the art of appreciating each moment as it transforms into cherished memories. Sweet memories! 💕
